Any information on everything from advertising my new "business" to rental costs to how much to pay employees would be useful. Also, any webpages that has any information regarding hair salons and what you need to have in stock to open.

I am a freshman in college, probably majoring in theatre and minoring in creative writing. I have some debt I want to pay off as soon as possible and several plans to travel and study abroad within the next four years.

I don’t really have the time or ability (no car) to hold down a real job during the school year, but I do want to work this summer in addition to getting an internship or volunteering at a theatre in my hometown. The only "real" job I’ve ever had was a contract stitching job at a community theatre one summer, but besides that I have lots and lots of school and volunteer work.

I think I would do well in a retail/food service setting or doing something clerical, but I don’t really know how to go about applying. There are several restaurants, hair salons, clothing stores, and other small businesses a short walk from my house.

Any tips? Do places like that usually hire inexperienced students? I’m not looking for anything long-term, just a summer job with somewhat flexible hours to help pay for school and some other things. Thanks!
Maybe I should clarify a little…I know *where* I should apply, I just don’t know how to get an application or my chances of getting the job. Do I just waltz in and ask at the front counter, or do I call? I’m in uncharted waters here!

I am a designer in Kansas City who creates full color business cards, but I just don’t know HOW to sell them to businesses. I go door to door to each business (hair salons, bakerys, Car Dealerships, etc.) Pretty much every store on the block.

Maybe I’m doing something wrong. I walk in, show them my business card compared to theirs, and explain that they are really inexpensive and personalized. I’ve only sold about 8 card designs in 3 months. WHY CAN’T I SELL MORE!!

It’s not the designs either because people are awed by my previously made cards.

HELP PLEASE!!

My parents own and I manage a small linen and uniform service. In 2000, my first year on the job (still in H.S.) we processed just over 3,300 tons of linen (you thought you had a lot of laundry). By 2002, it was down to about 3,000 tons and was 3,000-3,100 tons per year through 2006. In 2007 it was down to less than 2,500 tons.
We’ve had lay offs. We have more clients now than we did in 2002, but their volume is way down. We’ve absorbed most of the energy cost increases and passed little on to our customers. They are motels, restaurants, nursing homes, truck stops, gyms, tanning, hair salons, etc.
Every April things start to ramp up, not really this year. There isn’t a competitor taking business from us. Truck stops offer free showers with diesel fill ups. Less stuff being sold, fewer trucks on the road. Fewer free showers, less linen to process.
It is hilarious to hear the media and politicians discover what we realized 10 months ago. More lay off are coming.

I’m looking to start a hair salon business. The thing is.. I have the money and the time. I just don’t know much about starting a business or even a hair salons. I have a couple trustworthy people that can help me manage. But when looking for a business location… What do I need to look for? What are some basic start up necessities? Example- what are costs, do i need licenses, what kind, where can i go to get them…etc.

The building comes with all the furniture included. Basically, where do i start?

Any brainstorming ideas will help.

Thanks in advance!!!!!!
